I always begin with an idea in mind. If painting plein air, I take time to view different compositions and lighting sources and chose the one that best communicates a story of what I’m seeing or experiencing. This has to captured in a short period of time as most of these element change quickly: light changes as weather conditions shift. Remembering what you started with and staying true is part of the challenge.
In sculpture I usually start with a visual in mind. This could come from an actual living model in front of me or it could be something that inspired me from the past. Sculpture is very expressive to me and I love the aspect of walking around an object and experiencing it from all angles. While my background is in package design - which is mainly a six sided object communicating a concept - sculpture allows me to experiment using different mediums and concepts - each with its own unique challenge and means of execution.
As the viewer is sees my work I hope they will be moved by the same excitement I felt while creating it.
Carson Pritchard received a degree in graphic design in 1978 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Carson founded Carson Pritchard Design in 1981 specializing in graphic and package design. She received numerous awards and recognition for her work in design; a career spanning 20 years. In addition to her business pursuits, she taught package design at Art Center for 15 years and most recently taught at The Academy of Art in San Francisco.
